Toyo has released the 195/50R16 and the 225/45R17 Proxes R888 for the Lotus Elise.

The R888 is a DOT tire that is designed for competition driving and can be used on the street.

If someone told you to shave the tread off of a brand new tire to make it perform better on dry road and last longer would you believe them? When it comes to Road Race and Autocross tires in most cases its true.

Competition or R-Compound tires like the Toyo Proxes RA1, Toyo Proxes R888, and Hankook Ventus RS2 Z212 tires are DOT approved tires for use in extreme situations.  The tires are made with 6/32 to 10/32 of tread depth to use as a rain tire or to drive from home to the event and back again.  This much tread will flex under extreme conditions thus reduce traction and performance of the tire and also generate heat.  An enemy of tire life is heat.  Even though you need heat in a tire to perform to its greatest potential, to much can be a bad thing.  To much heat can cause the tread to blister and fail.  Many R-Compound tires are designed to be shaved to 4/32 or less to remove the tread blocks and stabilizes the footprint of the tire.  Also by removing the tread it removes weight, as much as 2 or 3 pounds.

Tire shaving is an effective way to get more of the tires performance capability early in its life.
